The Society for the Preservation of the Greek Heritage

About SPGH

The Society for the Preservation of the Greek Heritage (SPGH), a not-for-profit organization, was founded in 1974. SPGH was originally founded to assist in Greek restoration of Byzantine monasteries, churches, and the historic Plaka House in Athens, which now serves as the headquarters for Elliniki Etairia, an enviromental protection agency and our affiliated organization.

Our present programs are dedicated to increasing awareness of and appreciation for ancient and modern Greek culture and philosophy, and to exploring the interrelationship between the Greek heritage and contemporary society worldwide. The Greek legacy has contributed to the development of Western civilization from the birth of democratic principles 2,500 years ago and has had a profound influence on art, architecture, dance, poetry, theater, not to mention the creation of the Olympic games.

In the United States and Greece, SPGH seeks to encourage sound environmental concepts that protect cultural and naturall treasures.

The programs and activities of the Society for the Preservation of the Greek Heritage in the United State and in Greece are supported by membership and donations.
